Looking Out

Late one
evening around dusk my dog, Sparkles, started
barking. It wasn’t that unusual for her to bark as
some of the people that live down the street tend to
ignore the leash law and let their dogs roam all over
the neighborhood. I go out on the deck because her
barking has intensified. I had expected to see a
couple of other dogs rummaging for food. Imagine my
surprise to see four deer emerge from the bushy
tree-line that borders my property.

I live in an urban area. The nearest hospital and school is only a mile away. However my neighborhood is relatively quiet. Everyone looks out for each other but mostly keep to themselves. I have a very large lot that is back away from the road and the property behind mine was abandoned years ago. It has grown up quite a bit.
I look down off the deck and I find four deer standing there looking at me. There were three does and a buck. So now I officially have my own herd. I did notice that they were a lot smaller than their country cousins. I believe they are smaller due to the lack of food, water and roaming area. I’m used to seeing raccoons and possums in town but not deer. I hope that no one decides to shoot them when season opens up.
