Early Morning Blues
Tuesday February 02 • 06:50 AM
I always believed blues is a music that is best
served on a rusty dish with a smooth drink and only
at the right time. Early morning blues for me, is a
blasphemy.
I tried an experiment this morning. It’s ten ‘till
seven and I put on Albert King. I procured a taste
for blues in the past couple of years. I found that
when I was feeling stressed, depressed, hectic, etc.
I could put on some blues, sit back, relax and just
enjoy the evening. Prior to these experiences I
didn’t listen to blues much. I didn’t listen to jazz
much. I didn’t dislike it; I just didn’t have much of
a collection.
But, during those evenings I found there was certain times to play certain songs. Certain drinks went well with those songs. The mood and atmosphere greatly enhanced or diminished the song. Interesting that I find this is the only genre where the atmosphere has to be just right for me to really experience the music. Unfortunately, for me, the best time to listen to this music is the late evening. This is unfortunate because the late evening is usually filled with several other tasks and taking the time to set or find the right atmosphere and put on the right music does not work very well.
So this morning I decided to play some blues and I’m quite disappointed and pleased at the same time. Disappointed that this music only works under specialized settings, but pleased that this music remains nostalgic for me. This is the only genre of music that has to be experienced this way.
I turned off Albert King, saving him for a rainy day. What am I listening to now? Gregorian Chant by the Benedictine Monks of St. Michael’s. A very appropriate meditative choice for the morning.
